I call my business “The Illustrated Life” because I carry a little watercolor book with a fine-tipped ink pen in my pocket, and whip them both out when something strikes my fancy: beauty, whimsy, the backs off people’s heads in a concert or a meeting, or a space with challenging angles (buildings and interiors) and strong colors. (the deep orange/red of “Inga’s Room” in this year’s calendar is my favorite color. I am both dog and butterfly - one drools, the other flits about. Contradictory, n”est-ce pas? I draw small, but I love all my drawings. They make me happy and more expansive. As someone who has journaled most of her life, it has also taken a long time for me tl move to drawing as my primary way of communication. but drawing is so different from writing. I generally go into a zone when I draw, trying to translate a 3-dimensional visual reality onto a 2-dimensional flat page.I approach this challenge with a beginner’s mind which goes something like this: “Well I have no idea what I’m doing here, but let’s see what I can learn from myself.”

The Wolf’s Trail, by Thomas D. Peacock, and published by Holy Cow! Press, this story tells of Zhi-Shay, an elder wolf, and a litter of young wolves living somewhere on the side of a hill overlooking the river that flows through Nagahchiwangong in Northern Minnesota. This is an old traditional folksong made famous by Pete Seeger in the 1960s and is just as appealing to children today as it was back then. It is a cumulative story and folksong starting with a hole in the ground, a tree in the hole, a limb on the tree, a branch on the limb, a twig, a nest, an egg, a bird, an eyelash, a bug, a wing and finally a germ. Children enjoy the repeating chorus and trying to remember the correct order.
Dock Memories
This book is a photo memoir depicting old photographs of family and friends on Madeline Island during the summers in the 1950s and 1960s. The book started out as an assignment for a class I ook several years ago. The assignment was to write a book about something with a lot of memories attached to it. I didn't have to think too hard to decide on writing about the dock where I had such fond memories of my childhood.
